Movies & Munchkins: 2014

I've been trying to get around to a movie night for a couple of weeks. I buy supplies at Dollar Tree, Michael's, etc while I'm out running errands and see something that I think might fit a particular movie. The supplies are starting to take over a corner of my computer/craft room so I decided I needed to clear some out. I asked HD what movie she wanted. She said Frozen and then quickly changed her mind and went with Winnie the Pooh. So that's what we did and it was great! I forgot how much I enjoy this movie.

When I think about Winnie the Pooh, I think of him trying to get honey from a bee hive. One of my favorite Pooh stories is when he's trying to be a little black rain cloud and float up to the hive without the bees catching him. So I knew I had to have him sitting below a tree with a hive in it as our table decor. I made a fairly simple tree out of brown packing paper and then cut out some leaves to tape on.

The beehive was made out of some paper mache I found on clearance at Michael's. I packed it into the shape of an egg and let it dry. Then I taped some honeycomb scrapbook paper around the outside before gluing some of the packing paper around it to finish it off. I added a few simple bees to complete the look. The bees are made of yellow pom poms with black pipe cleaners wrapped around them and then wax paper wings I cut and glued on.

I went with a red table cloth and yellow plates.

I made up some movie tickets and put them on the table.

I found these cute ear printables at merrimentdesign. They were super easy to make and I knew the kids were going to love them!

I quickly made a cute design to add around the outside of our glasses. Then I threw in some blue straws I had laying around.

Our movie nights are never complete without a menu. The kids always love to look at these as they sit down to eat. I found this cute poster art on buzzfeed and decided to use it for the cover.

For dinner we had Piglets in a blanket with Pooh's honey mustard dipping sauce, vegetables from Rabbit's garden and Eeyore's feeling blue punch. For desert we had 100 Acre Wood trail mix. The trail mix was Cheetos (Tigger tails), pretzels (sticks from Eeyore's house), teddy grahams (Pooh bears) and Nutter Butters with Hershey Kisses attached (Piglet's haycorns).

Our crafts were to make Winnie the Pooh from a paper plate and to color pictures. Then for activities we played honey pot hunt, helped Tigger bounce, pinned the tail on Eeyore and then played a game of don't get caught by the bee hot potato.

About a week ago HD and I made this honey pot out of a small planter, planter base and wooden ball. We painted them gold and then used a black paint marker to add Hunny to it. On movie night we played a game of honey pot hunt. One of us was chosen to be Winnie the Pooh and the rest of us became Backsons. Winnie the Pooh had to hide his honey from the Backson group. We played several rounds of this so that everyone had a turn being Winnie the Pooh a couple of times. I helped Little Man when it was his turn to hide the pot. He came up with a great spot but then excitedly took HD right to it.

Piglet's haycorns were made with mini Nutter Butters and Hershey Kisses. I stuck them together using peanut butter.

I printed off pin the tail on Eeyore from Disney family. I laminated it and then hung it up.

Once I had everything set up I had the kids start painting their paper plates while I cooked dinner. Once their plates were painted we set them aside to dry.

Then we moved on to coloring pictures of Pooh's friends.

HD knows that our meals during movie nights are themed. She asked me what the vegetables were named. I told her they were vegetables from Rabbit's garden. She was so excited to tell Mr. when he got home that I'd gone to the 100 Acre Wood to get them from Rabbit. I also decided to add Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet to the table with Pooh.

This is the reason I have movie nights!

After dinner we finished our Winnie the Pooh plate craft.

Then played our game of honey pot hunt.

Then we helped Tigger bounce. We put Tigger on our blanket and then used it to bounce him up as high as we could. The kids thought it was so fun.

Next up was our don't get caught by the bee game. I turned on some Winnie the Pooh theme music and we quickly passed the bee around until the music stopped. Whoever was holding the bee had been caught and was out.

Then we played pin the tail on Eeyore.

Little Man quickly decided that he didn't like being blind folded. So he took it off and stuck his tail on the paper.

Then we finished off by watching the movie. HD made sure all the 100 Acre Woods crew was there to watch with her.

Little Man was just excited about his snack.

Life has been so crazy busy lately that movie nights haven't been happening. I haven't found the time to prep for them which has been sad because I love putting them together. HD and I decided it was way past time for one and planned a Sleeping Beauty night.

I decided to stick to Pink since it's Aurora's color. I picked up a pink and white table cloth at Dollar tree. I placed the white one on the bottom and then folded the pink in half and placed it down the middle like a runner. I gathered the two together on each end of the table and tied them securely. While I was at dollar tree I came across some decorate silver plates and plastic goblet type cups. I decided to buy them and make dinner into a royal feast.

I made some movie tickets for us as well.

A while ago I came across this cute block play set at Michael's craft store and bought it for the kids. I thought it worked well for a center piece on the table.

The kids really like looking through our menu's to discover what the night has in store. This is the movie poster I chose for the cover.

I had a hard time coming up with Sleeping Beauty themed foods. I finally decided to make a pork roast and call it Prince Phillip's dragon breast. We also had Briar Rose's forest berries, Fauna's sparkling water and then Pink...no make it blue...cupcakes for dessert.

Our crafts were to paint a Maleficent dragon and color Aurora's birthday cake. The activities were to pick forest berries and then play a game of sleep tag.

HD and Little Man were so excited to check out the menus before starting dinner.

Hailey was excited to discover what a dragon tasted like. Mr. wasn't too happy that I had pretended to cook up a dragon.

And, of course, dessert was a big hit!

After dinner we started painting our dragons. I found these at Michael's for a couple of dollars.

Then we colored and decorated Aurora's birthday cake. I found the printable here.

Then the kids went into the living room to pick forest berries. I gave them a basket and they collected the pom pom's I had taped all over the room. They both hummed while they picked the berries.

Then we went outside to play sleep tag. The person who was 'it' was Maleficent. They had to go around and tag everyone else to put them to sleep. The players who hadn't been put to sleep yet could wake the ones who had. We played several rounds of this before movie time.
